Chargepoint installation: what to expect

One of our most common questions at Plug&Drive is ‘how is a charge point installed?’ so this post will explain how we would install your charge point and why it is important to get an installer who is fully qualified.

Site Survey

Our first step will be to conduct a site survey, if this is a workplace installation then we will conduct an in-person site survey, this is one of the criteria of the OZEV grant but it is also good practice as most businesses’ electric supply is more complicated than home installations.

If we are installing a charge point at your home, then we can do a site survey over video call or by looking at pictures. If we have any concerns or questions, we will arrange an in-person site survey.

We will then be able to provide you with a detailed quotation, and assuming we don’t have to do any additional work when installing (we will confirm this with you beforehand) that will be the price you pay. Make sure to check your OZEV eligibility using our quick online quiz, as this could subsidise up to 75% of the cost of your charge points.

Installation Day

Our electricians will get to your home or business on the day of installation either in a morning slot or an afternoon slot. They will then do a quick mini-site survey to check that nothing has changed since we last saw it.

The rest of the session depends on the type of installation you require. Our electricians will put the charger on its mount (either the wall or a pedestal) and connect it to your electricity supply.

The rest is on a case-by-case basis. You may need an additional metering device or a fault protection device, but we will make this clear to you at the site survey.

Our electrician will then test the charge point and make sure it is working perfectly. They will set up and ensure you have downloaded the correct app and make sure you feel confident using it. They may then take a picture of the installation and fill out some forms with you.

These forms are required by the national grid and the government grant schemes.

Our Electricians

All of our electricians are fully qualified, and this is important to look out for as a lot of companies use subcontractors who don’t have the right qualifications and don’t know what they are doing – this is particularly dangerous when they are undertaking a complicated installation.

Therefore it is important to check your installer has the City&Guilds 2919-01 EV car charging point installers course. This means they know what they are doing when installing your charge point, they will often include specific product training so they will be experts installing a particular type of charge point.

After Installation

After the installation, our electrician will send you an electrical installation certificate and potentially a building regulations certificate of compliance.

You will then be sent a warranty document from the Plug&Drive team; we will also notify the national grid about the installation and handle all the grant claim forms.
